Mr. Laimujam Premjit, Kidney Transplant on March, 2023
In March, 2023, MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan- 'Making Transplants Affordable' team received an email from Shija Hospitals and Research Institute Pvt. Ltd, Imphal, Manipur, requesting financial aid for Mr. Laimujam Premjit's kidney transplant. He was suffering from chronic kidney disease and needed an urgent transplantation.
Mr. Laimujam Premjit Singh, age 44, hails from Imphal West, Manipur. It had been two long years since Laimujam was suffering from kidney disease. It was very painful and scary, when his family learned that Laimujam was having kidney problem. The doctors at Shija hospitals, informed the family that sooner or later, the patient will require a kidney transplant and it would be the best option to sustain his life. After hearing that word 'Transplant', the family was shaken and worried up as to whom would they ask for support and how much the transplant would cost. Since Laimujam was not able to work due to his health condition, his wife had to earn money for the family expenses. 'He had to take rest. He kept smiling at me, hiding his pain. I couldn't bear the thought of living without my husband, and I consoled myself and decided to go to the local market for selling cloths as a street vendor to earn money.'-shared his wife with deep sorrow.
On February 12, 2023, Laimujam's daughter called his mother when she was in the market. She informed her mother that her father was very unwell and was having difficulty breathing. Laimujam was immediately taken to Shija hospitals.
Laimujam underwent an emergency dialysis at the ICU. His health condition was slightly improved and he got discharged after two days. The doctor explained the family that the patient had to undergo dialysis two times a week otherwise his health might be affected. The family was advised to start planning for kidney transplant. They were also informed about living donation and that one of their family members, above 18 years of age, could donate one kidney to the patient of his/her blood samples would match with the patient.
At first, Laimujam's wife underwent blood tests with a hope to save her husband's life but unfortunately, her blood group didn't match with her husband. But a ray of hope came to their lives, when Laimujam's younger sister's blood sample matched with her brother. She was very happy to be able to save his brother's life. But another challenge was waiting for them to collect the huge amount for the transplant. The estimate cost for the transplant was Rs 6 lakhs.
MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan team played a major role in supporting Laimujam's kidney transplant at Shija hospitals. The doctors and transplant coordinator were informed about Anudaan from MOHAN Foundation's trained transplant coordinators at Shija hospitals. Anudaan team also helped the hospital in connecting with other NGOs for some more financial support to be able to raise the full amount, which was needed for Laimujam's kidney transplant. It was the first time, when the hospital was trying to fundraise on behalf of a patient's family, considering the poor economic situation of the family.
With the support from Anudaan, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana & other NGOs, Laimujam successfully underwent a kidney transplant on March 03, 2023. Anudaan sanctioned Rs 1 lakh for the transplant.
Both brother and sister are doing fine now and their lives are back to normal. Laimujam is now aspiring to be an entrepreneur.
'I would like to thank the entire team of MOHAN Foundation for not only supporting my husband's kidney transplant but also supporting the hospital staff in connecting with other like-minded NGOs and helping in the whole process of documentation.' .'-Mrs. Hematombi Devi, wife.
