Master Somu C, Liver Transplant

MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan - 'Making Transplants Affordable' team received an email from Aster CMI hospital, Bengaluru requesting financial aid for Master Somu's liver transplant, who was suffering with Cirrhosis of Liver with glycogen storage disease (type 4) and needed an urgent liver transplant.

Somu, aged 1 years 8 months, hails from Bellari district Gudadhuru village, Karnataka. He belongs to a very poor family. His father works as a daily wage labourer and with the meagre salary, they were somehow managing their family expenses. However Somu's multiple hospital visits drained their resources completely. It was very tough for them to pay Rs. 15 lakhs for Somu's liver transplant.

Since 2022, Somu frequently used to get sick and gradually his eyes began to turn yellow. The parents took him to a local clinic where he was given medication which only gave him temporary relief.

"We took him to many hospitals in our hometown of Bellary - nobody could tell what was wrong. Then we rushed him to Bengaluru when he started getting recurrent fevers. It was there that he was diagnosed with liver damage. Doctors recommended urgent liver transplant." - Shruthi (mother of Somu)

After undergoing several tests, Somu's mother discovered that she was a perfect match to donate a portion of her liver to save her child's life. However, upon learning about the exorbitant estimated cost of liver transplant, the parents were devastated.

Following a discussion about their financial struggles, the doctors at Aster CMI Hospital enlightened them about the assistance provided by MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan program. This brought them a glimmer of hope. With support from Anudaan and few other NGOs, Somu successfully underwent a liver transplant. Anudaan sanctioned Rs. 1.5 lakhs for the transplant.

"MOHAN Foundation not only financially supported us but also supported us morally during our grief. I want to thank the Foundation for supporting our son's transplant. Without him, our life is nothing" - Shruthi (mother of Somu)
