Master Bhaskar V, Liver Transplant on April 19, 2023

On April 19, 2023, MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan- 'Making Transplants Affordable' team received an email from Aster CMI hospital, Bengaluru requesting financial aid for Master Bhaskar V's liver transplant. The child was suffering from liver cirrhosis with hepatopulmonary syndrome. It is a serious condition and can develop in any patient with chronic or acute liver disease. Bhaskar needed an urgent transplantation. His liver cirrhosis was characterized by jaundice and blood vomiting.

Master Bhaskar.V, aged 13 years, hails from Raichur district of Karnataka. He comes from a poor family. His father is a Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus driver and mother is a homemaker. The father's meager monthly income was not sufficient for their son's medicines and treatment. The family income took a massive hit, as they already spent a lot of money in diagnosing Bhaskar's health issues and treatment. It was very tough for them to pay a huge cost of Rs. 15 lakhs for patient's liver transplant.

The child already had health related issues such as loss of appetite, jaundice and loss of weight when he was first admitted to Aster CMI hospital, Bengaluru. The parents were regular to the hospital for their child's health follow ups and tests and the family had already borrowed huge amount of money from their relatives and friends. But the family was ready for everything and anything to save Bhaskar's life. 'Can parents let their child die because they don't have sufficient money?' asked the disheartened parents. At Aster CMI hospital, the doctors examined Bhskar and made him undergo several tests. It was found that Bhaskar was suffering from liver cirrhosis and needed an urgent transplant. This news shocked the parents.

Bhaskar's mother found that she was a suitable liver donor for her son after she underwent several tests. The estimated cost for the transplant was Rs. 15 lakhs. The parents were bewildered as to how they would arrange this huge amount.

After the parents discussed about their poor background, the doctors at Aster CMI informed them about MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan and gave them all the necessary information and details. This piece of information gave them a big relief, confidence, and hope.

With the support of Anudaan, hospital concession on transplant cost and other NGOs, Bhaskar underwent a liver transplant on 06.05.2023. Anudaan sanctioned Rs. 1.5 Lakhs for his transplant.

Bhaskar is doing well post the transplant and is excited about starting school. The child is very active, cheerful, and enjoys playing outdoor games, especially cricket. He wants to be a famous cricketer in future.

"Our sincere gratitude to Anudaan team for saving our son's life. Thanks for changing our lives."- Mr. Venkatesh and Mrs. Lakshmi, Parents of Bhaskar V.
