Mast. Shoaib Shabbir Hapani, Liver Transplant on September 23, 2024
On June 29, 2024, MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan-'Making Transplants Affordable' team received an email from Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra, requesting financial aid for liver transplant of Mast. Shoaib Shabbir Hapani. He was suffering from decompensated chronic liver disease, secondary to Biliary atresia with successful Kasai portoenterostomy and requiring an urgent live transplant.
Shoaib Shabbir Hapani, 15, hails from Mumbai, Maharashtra from a poor household. Shoaib’s father makes a living as a salesman at a furniture store. His parents were somehow making ends meet but it was impossible for the family to afford the hefty cost of a liver transplant.
It all began in June 2024 when Shoaib started throwing up a lot. His anxious parents rushed him to Nanavati Hospital to try to figure out what was causing it, and after a few tests, it was discovered that Shoaib had chronic liver disease. Doctors recommended liver transplant to help Shoaib lead a healthy life. Following a few tests, it was determined that Shoaib's mother was a perfect fit for her son. However, the estimated cost of a liver transplant (Rs. 16.5 lakh) proved to be prohibitively expensive.
After the family discussed about their poor economic situation, the doctors at Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai informed them about MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan. This information gave them new hope. Mast. Shoaib got a successful liver transplant on September 23, 2024, thanks to Anudaan and a few other few other NGOs. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs. 1.5 Lakh for his liver transplant.
“We were already deeply in debt from borrowing funds for his treatment, and we had no means of covering the cost of his transplant. When we learned about the MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan program, we were filled with hope that we could afford the transplant. My family and I are truly grateful to your organization, and words cannot fully express our appreciation.” -Mr. Shabbir Hapani, Father
