Baby Darshita Zore, Liver Transplant on February 18, 2023

On February 18, 2023, MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan-'Making Transplants Affordable' team received an email from Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra, requesting financial aid for liver transplant of Baby Darshita Zore. She was suffering from chronic liver disease.

Baby Darshita Zore, 1 year and 10-month-old, hails from Buldhana, Maharashtra. She belongs to a poor family. Her father is a mechanic in a local garage, earning a meagre monthly income. He is the sole earner in the family. His relatives were supporting the family to be able to meet the basic needs as the father had to utilize all his monthly income in his daughter's pre transplant tests and medication. It was very hard for the family to afford the huge liver transplant cost, i.e.; Rs. 16.5 lakhs. Darshita was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia by birth. Biliary atresia is a blockage in the tubes (ducts) that carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder. This congenital condition occurs when the bile ducts inside or outside the liver do not develop normally. At a young age, Darshita had to undergo a painful Kasai surgery which unfortunately failed. A Kasai portoenterostomy is a surgical treatment performed on infants with Type IVb choledochal cyst and biliary atresia to allow for bile drainage.

After taking treatment in various hospitals, the patient finally had to travel to Mumbai for advanced treatment and for her liver transplant. Darshita was later admitted to Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital. After couple of tests, it was found out that Darshita's grandmother was the perfect match for her granddaughter and that she would be able to save her granddaughter's life by donating her a portion of her liver. The biggest challenge for the family was to arrange the huge amount to pay for the transplant.

After discussing about the family's poor economic situation, doctors at Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital informed them about MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan. This information gave them a new hope. With support from MOHAN Foundation, few other NGOs and hospital's concession on transplant cost, Baby Darshita successfully underwent a liver transplant on 24-04-2023. MOHAN Foundation's Anudaan sanctioned Rs. 1.5 lakh for her liver transplant.

Both child and grandmother are recovering well. Darshita's parents are very happy to see that their daughter received a second chance to live. Her parents wish that she becomes a doctor in future.

'We are very thankful to MOHAN Foundation for supporting us. It would have been impossible for our daughter to undergo such an expensive liver transplant without this financial support. Our daughter has a new life now.'- Mrs. Snehal Zore, mother.
