Puratchimani, a 32-year-old man from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, comes from a very humble background. His family consists of his wife, elderly mother, and brother. To support his family, Puratchimani used to work as a plumber and electrician, taking up odd jobs whenever possible. Unfortunately, due to declining health, he was forced to stop working. The family’s only source of income comes from selling fish, a small business managed by his mother and brother.
Puratchimani’s health struggles began in 2021 when he noticed swelling in his legs. Concerned, he visited a nearby clinic where tests revealed that he had high blood pressure. Further investigations showed that his creatinine levels were significantly elevated, and doctors advised him to start dialysis.
Seeking a second opinion, Puratchimani visited The Madras Medical Mission in Chennai. There, doctors conducted a kidney biopsy and diagnosed him with chronic renal failure. For several months, he underwent dialysis. Eventually, doctors recommended a kidney transplant as the best option to prolong his life.
Fortunately, Puratchimani’s brother was found to be a suitable donor. However, the family faced a major challenge — arranging the large amount of money required for the transplant.
Understanding the family’s financial difficulties, doctors at The Madras Medical Mission informed them about Anudaan, a support program by MOHAN Foundation. This gave the family renewed hope.
With the support of the hospital, the MOHAN Foundation, and a few other NGOs, Puratchimani successfully underwent a kidney transplant on February 20, 2024. Through the Anudaan program of MOHAN Foundation, an amount of Rs. 1 lakh was approved to support the transplant.
Today, Puratchimani’s story stands as a testament to hope, compassion, and the life-saving power of organ donation.
