Where it Began

On July 29, 2024, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan- “Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Sahyadri Hospital, Pune, Maharashtra, requesting financial aid for liver transplant of Mr. Balkrishna Bhikanrao Suryawanshi, who was suffering from decompensated chronic liver disease with unknown etiology.

Coming from a financially disadvantaged background, Balkrishna eked out a living working as a farmer. The family found themselves in an extremely challenging situation with their main caregiver in a life-threatening situation. The daunting prospect of covering a staggering cost of Rs. 18 lakhs for Balkrishna’s Liver transplant loomed large over their heads.

Balkrishna’s younger daughter was found to be a perfect match for the transplant after a battery of testing. The family then discussed about their economic challenges with the doctors at Sahyadri hospital. The parents were informed about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan, with support from Anudaan and few other NGOs, Mr. Balkrishna underwent a liver transplant on August 29, 2024.

Sadly, despite the transplant, Balkrishna passed away on December 19, 2024. The MOHAN Foundation extended support to the grieving family, recognizing their struggles, and disbursed the approved sum of Rs. 1,50,000 for the liver transplant.
