On February 14, 2025, the Anudaan: Making Transplants Affordable team received a financial aid request from Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai, for Amit Punjahari Bhoknal, an 18-year-old from Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.
Amit was born with Biliary Atresia, a rare and serious liver condition. His journey has been challenging from the very beginning. Shortly after birth, he underwent a Kasai surgery, which initially brought hope and improvement. However, at the age of 12, his health began to deteriorate again, and doctors recommended an urgent liver transplant to save his life. His mother was identified as the ideal donor.
Amit’s parents, both daily wage labourers, struggled to keep up with the financial demands of his treatment. The family’s modest income and multiple hospital visits over the years drained all their savings. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to bear the high cost of the transplant.
With support from the physicians at Gleneagles Hospital, Anudaan, and several NGOs, funds were raised for the transplant. The MOHAN Foundation contributed INR 2,50,000 towards the cost. Amit successfully underwent a liver transplant on March 25, 2025.
“We were losing hope. Watching our son suffer while knowing we couldn’t afford the treatment was heartbreaking. The support from Anudaan gave us the strength to believe again. We are deeply grateful.”- Vaishali Bhoknal, Amit’s mother
