Miss Divya Rajendra Mankar

Where it Began

On July 17, 2024, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan-‘Making Transplants Affordable’ team received an email from Sahyadri Hospitals Ltd., Pune, Maharashtra, requesting financial aid for liver transplant of Baby Divya Rajendra Mankar. She was suffering from decompensated chronic liver disease with unknown etilology.

Divya Rajendra Mankar, 14, hails from Pune, Maharashtra from a poor household. Divya’s family comprises of six members, including her elderly grandparents. Her parents are daily wage labourers. However, due to Divya’s deteriorating condition, her mother was compelled to leave her job and take care of her daughter. Her parents were somehow making ends meet but it was impossible for the family to afford the high cost of a liver transplant.

Divya’s health problems began when she was 9 months old and she was diagnosed with jaundice. She was given treatment but after few years, she began to complain about stomach aches frequently, which led to the discovery that fluid was building up inside her liver. Her condition continued to deteriorate, and she eventually began bleeding profusely from her nose and mouth. She was later diagnosed with chronic liver illness.

“Her courage gave us all strength. She deserved a chance to fulfil her dreams and live a happy, healthy life.”- Mrs. Vaishali Mankar, Mother

Divya was then referred to Sahyadri Hospital for liver transplantation. Following a few tests, Divya’s mother was discovered to be an ideal match for her daughter. However, the estimated cost of a liver transplant (Rs. 15 lakh) proved to be prohibitively expensive.

After the family discussed about their poor economic situation, the doctors at Sahyadri Hospital, Pune informed them about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan. This information gave them new hope. Baby Divya got a successful liver transplant on August 7, 2024, thanks to Anudaan and a few other few other NGOs. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs. 2 Lakh for her liver transplant.

“Her ambition is to become a doctor, but with her diagnosis and the hefty expense of transplantation, we felt we had failed as parents. Thank you to foundations like yours for providing our daughter a second chance at life.”- Mr. Rajendra Mankar, Father
