On March 16, 2022, Mohan Foundation’s Anudaan Making Transplants Affordable’ team received an email from New Era Hospital & Research Institute, Nagpur, Maharashtra requesting financial aid for Master Mohd. Abbas Ali Haider’s liver Transplant, who was suffering from Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia with Cirrhosis. He was in need of an urgent liver transplant.
Master Mohd Abbas Ali Haider, age 9 months, hails from Mominpura, Nagpur, Maharashtra. He belongs to a poor family. His father works as a mechanical labourer, earning Rs. 5000/ per month. With the meagre income, it was difficult for him to pay for medicines and treatment of his son.
Abbas Ali suffered from mild fever, paleness of eyes & stomach swelling when he was 5 months old.
Since many people suspected that Abbas Ali was suffering from jaundice, he was given ayurveda medicine to cure jaundice. Later, he was also taken to a local hospital for blood test to understand the actual problem. It was found that the child was infected with hepatitis B. He was immediately referred to New Era Hospital & Research Institute, Nagpur for better treatment. After few tests, the doctor informed that Abbas Ali’s health condition was critical as he was suffering from Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia with Cirrhosis. He needed an urgent liver transplant in order to survive. The parents were shocked. They were worried for the huge cost of the transplant. His family knew that if they could not arrange the money, their son would not be able to lead a normal life. Their income and savings were all used for his treatment and now they didn’t know whom to turn to. They approached Anudaan team after they were informed of the same by the hospital.
With the support from Anudaan, few other NGO’s and the hospital concession on transplant cost, Abbas Ali successfully underwent a liver transplant on June 20, 2022. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs 1 Lakh for his liver transplant.
Abbas Ali is slowly resuming a normal life. His parents are very happy and excited about his future. They wish that their son becomes a doctor in future.
