On May 6, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan- ‘Making Transplants Affordable’ team received an email from MAX Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, New Delhi requesting financial aid for Master Aryan Singh’s liver transplant, who was suffering from Wilson’s disease, a rare inherited disorder that causes copper to accumulate in liver, brain and other vital organs. Master Aryan was brought to the hospital in a very critical situation. He was in need of an urgent liver transplant.
Master Aryan Singh, age 9 is from Mandawali Fazalpur, New Delhi. He belongs to a poor family. His father works as a housekeeping staff in a hotel, earning Rs. 8,000 per month which was not sufficient for his son’s treatment and medicines. The family had to borrow money from their relatives and friends as they could not afford the huge cost of their son’s liver transplant. After receiving treatment from local hospital, Aryan was taken to MAX Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, New Delhi. His health condition deteriorated to the point where he had to be rushed to the ICU. He was in a critical condition after his bilirubin levels went up. He was unconscious for few days. That moment was very frightful for the family as they started thinking that Aryan was going to leave them all forever. Fortunately, his condition was stabilized after plasma therapy and few rounds of dialysis. But later, his disease surpassed the stage where medicines could help and only a liver transplant could save his life.
The family was relieved when they found out that Aryan’s mother, was a suitable donor. But the hefty price of the surgery, i.e.; Rs 16.5 lakh left them completely disheartened. After a lot of discussion with the doctors at MAX Super Specialty Hospital, the family was informed about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan. This information gave them hope. With the support from MOHAN Foundation, few other NGOs and the hospital’s concession on transplant cost, Master Aryan Singh successfully underwent a liver transplant on May 10, 2022. Anudaan sanctioned Rs 1 lakh towards his surgery.
Both the mother and son are doing well. Aryan is very happy and excited now for his future. He has started his education. His ambition is to join the police force.
