6-year-old Ira Akshay Chaudhary, from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, was meant to be spending her days playing and enjoying a carefree childhood like any other child her age. Instead, her family found themselves facing a medical emergency when she was diagnosed with liver failure caused by Tyrosinemia Type 1, a rare genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the FAH gene. Her only hope was an urgent liver transplant.
Ira’s father works as a farmer and takes on additional odd jobs to support the household, being the family’s only source of income, while her mother manages the home. When the need for a living donor arose, it was Ira’s 51-year-old grandmother who stepped forward, offering a part of her own liver to give her granddaughter a chance at survival.
The hospital’s initial estimate placed the cost of the transplant at ₹16,50,000. On July 21, 2026, Ira underwent the emergency procedure at Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai. The final bill came to ₹14,27,400.
Given the family’s financial constraints, Ira was approved for support of ₹3 lakh through Anudaan – Making Transplants Affordable, a MOHAN Foundation initiative, which contributed toward the cost of her transplant.
This assistance allowed the family to concentrate on what mattered most — Ira’s recovery — rather than the weight of medical expenses.
Now, Ira is on her way back to the everyday joys of being a child: playing, laughing, and growing up alongside her peers.
Her father, Mr. Akshay Kumar Anil Chaudhary, shared his gratitude:
“We had spent a lot of money on her treatment. Without the support of MOHAN Foundation and other organisations that came forward to help, the transplant and her treatment would not have been possible. We couldn’t have imagined managing this on our own, and we are deeply thankful to MOHAN Foundation for their generous support.”
