On December 28, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan – ‘Making Transplants Affordable’ team received an email from Max Super speciality hospital, Saket, Delhi requesting financial aid for Master Rick Adhikary’s liver transplant, who was suffering from Wilson Disease and needed an urgent liver transplant.
Master Rick Adhikary, age 5 years, hails from North 24, Parganas, West Bengal. He belongs to a poor family. His father works as a daily wage labourer, with his meagre salary of Rs. 2,000 they were somehow managing their family expenses, however Rick’s multiple hospital visits drained them completely. It was very tough for them to pay the huge cost i.e., Rs. 16 Lakh for Rick’s liver transplant.
Rick was a healthy child a year of his birth. Then he suffered from jaundice. It was during the treatment in Belur, Gulmarg hospital where he was also diagnosed with Hepatitis B and C. His health kept on deteriorating leading him to critical health condition. Anxious parents then decided to take their only son to MAX hospital, Saket with the hope to cure their son.
After few tests father was found to be a perfect match for his child. Family although with their limited sources of income managed to raise Rs. 12 lakhs for transplant through borrowing from friends, relatives etc. The family then discussed about their economic challenges with the doctors at Max Super Specialty hospital. The parents were informed about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan, with support from Anudaan and few other NGOs, Master. Rick Adhikari successfully underwent a liver transplant in the month of December, 2022. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs. 1,50,000 for his liver transplant.
