On April 20, 2023, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan – ‘Making Transplants Affordable’ team received an email from Nanavati Max Super Specialty hospital, Mumbai requesting financial aid for Baby Maleeha Malek’s liver transplant, who was suffering from Biliary Atresia and needed an urgent liver transplant.
Baby Maleeha, age 6 months, hails from Surat. She belongs to a very poor family. Her father works in a courier office. With his meagre salary they were somehow managing their family expenses, however Maleeha’s multiple hospital visits drained their resources completely. It was very tough for them to pay the huge cost i.e., Rs. 16.5 Lakh for Maleeha’s liver transplant.
Baby Maleeha’s parents were happy after birth of their first-born child. After a month of her birth, she was diagnosed with Jaundice. Her health kept on deteriorating with eyes turning yellow and the stomach bloating. Anxious parents left no stones unturned to diagnose what was wrong with their little princess. Series of tests later parents were given a diagnosis that their daughter is suffering from Biliary Atresia. Doctors in Surat referred the child to Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital. Family was reluctant to go to Mumbai due to lack of finances and continued treatment in the Surat hospital, but the child’s condition kept on deteriorating.
‘Maleeha needs an urgent liver transplant. Her liver failure won’t let her live long. We cannot delay the liver transplant,’ the doctor impressed upon the parents.
Hearing this devastating news and with a hope to save their only daughter, the parents took the child to Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital. After few tests father was found to be a perfect match for his child. The family then discussed about their economic challenges with the doctors at Nanavati Max Super Specialty hospital. The parents were informed about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan, with support from Anudaan and few other NGOs, Baby Maleeha successfully underwent a liver transplant on August 08, 2023. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs. 1,50,000 for her liver transplant.
