Mast. Shaik Irshad

Where it Began

Mr. Shaik Irshad, aged 18, from Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, was a healthy and cheerful boy until 2021, when he developed jaundice. After undergoing a detailed check-up at Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, he was diagnosed with a serious liver ailment. Despite multiple hospital visits and medications, his condition worsened—his abdomen became swollen, his skin turned yellow, and he was unable to carry out his daily activities. Doctors confirmed that only a liver transplant could save his life. Later, he was diagnosed with Chronic Liver Disease due to Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), making the transplant even more urgent. When the doctors spoke about transplantation, Irshad’s mother immediately stepped forward to donate a part of her liver.

“He is my child. If my liver can save him, I will not think twice.” – Ms. Shaik Kareema, Irshad’s mother

For Irshad’s father, a driver and the sole breadwinner of a family of five, arranging Rs. 18 lakhs for the surgery seemed impossible. The family battled despair, fearing they might lose their child to a disease they could not afford to fight.

But hope arrived through kindness and compassion. The dedicated team at Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, helped arrange funds for the transplant, and their plea touched many hearts. MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan initiative also stepped in to support the family, sanctioning Rs. 1 lakh towards the transplant cost.

On August 6, 2025, Irshad underwent a successful liver transplant. Today, he is on the road to recovery, thanks to the courage of his mother and the generosity of many.

“A mother carries her child in the womb for nine months but in my case, I carried him twice. Once before he was born, and again when I gave him my liver. I am deeply grateful to MOHAN Foundation for helping us give my child a second chance at life.”- Ms. Shaik Kareema, Irshad’s mother.
